Awesome customized Tees

Another post like the Sock Snowmen that requires little crafting talent, but yields great results.

You will need:

A t-shirt – Try Fruit of the Loom value weight. I got one or £2.49 from ebay and they have all sizes and tons of colours to chose from.
A paintbrush.
A plastic bag or binliner.
A copy/picture of a design.
photo 1

Use the plastic bag inside the shirt to separate the fabric so that only the front is affected by the bleach. Make sure the bag is laid out flat and that your tee is laid out on a flat surface. Outside would be good, but if not possible, choose an area that isn’t carpeted!

photo 2

Next, use the chalk to roughly sketch your design. Don’t worry about being too accurate or arty….the look we are aiming for is distressed and a bit splattery so neatness isn’t an issue. My Avengers A looks a bit squished up, but it’s close enough!

photo 3 (2)
Next, use the paintbrush to start painting bleach over your design. Follow the chalk marks and focus on this part first. You will start to see results almost immediately. The splodges and marks can be added as you paint (dripping brush!) and then on purpose afterwards 😉

photo 4

Next, put your shirt in cold water for a couple of minutes to wash away any excess bleach. I ran mine under a cold water tap for 2 minutes, making sure to cover the whole of the bleached design. You could also pop your tee under the shower if that’s easier.

The next step is to wring the tee out and pop it into the wash. I washed mine with a tiny amount of washing liquid on a 40 degree quick wash. I left it to dry overnight and this is the final result (which my husband, the recipient of the tee) absolutely loved!

There you have it! A totally customized, one off tee!
You can try this method with other colour tees to see how different they turn out….or try different fabrics and t-shirt brands to see how the bleach reacts. We are planning an olive tee with a Captain America logo, a burgundy tee with an Iron Man Arc reactor and a brown tee with a Firefly logo.

Original inspiration for this project came from this post at Eight & Sixteen.

Baftas 2014 Red Carpet Fashion – hits and misses

Awards season is now in full swing.

Just ahead of the Academy awards next month were the BAFTAs, which took place last night.  It was a glittering night where Hollywood and UK film royalty (and also actual royalty) stepped out onto the (rainy) red carpet.

Who nailed the red carpet look? And who failed? Here are our hits and misses.

Break out star Lupita Nyong’o (12 years a slave) looked absolutely stunning in this green satin Dior number.  The colour is fresh, the cut is elegant and feminine and the gold band at the waist is echoed simply but effectively in the arm jewellery. Everything about this outfit is spot on.

Michelle Rodriguez….I honestly don’t know where to start, so I’ll start at the top. First off, her hair is a complete mess. Fine if you want to go for the carefree beach hair look on the beach, but at a red carpet event you should be polished and neat. Next, again – we’re not at the beach love. The surfer beaded jewellery (and that’s what it is, trust me), is great for the surfer bad ass chick beach look, but again – you’re at a movie award event at a prestigious location! Sparkly jewels and pretty accessories work.  Wooden surfer dude looking beads don’t. The dress.  THE DRESS.  Could have been cool if it wasn’t a) creased b) utterly ugly.  She could have got around the dress with the right hair, make up and jewellery but she failed on everything.  Ugh.

Maybe a controversial choice but I love Gillian Anderson in the striped blue satin gown with the flowing detail at the back.  She looks a little unsure (as though she forgot something….like maybe finishing her hair off?), but she gets away with it.  The earrings work too. Pretty.

Pink & Orange together often work, when done correctly. But the cut and shape of this gown is utterly naff and so are Lily’s hair accessories. From top to toe I think she looks like a complete joke, but since my favourite red carpet failure Helen Bonham Carter wasn’t there someone else had to provide the laughs.  Thanks, Lily Allen.

Cate Blanchett just looks so elegant. The dress is gorgeous and the necklace is very ‘Lord of the Rings’ and is a fab, pretty statement piece that works well with the gown. The gentle coiffed hairdo is feminine and well groomed but still loose enough to look soft on her face. The whole look is spot on.

Joely Richardson…, good.  Barely there make up, bad.  Chicken neck with no jewellery to hide said chicken neck, very very bad. Shapeless, loud, garish dress from Eastenders market – unforgivable. Weird middle toe being bigger than big toe and poking out of peep toes – horrific. Truly dreadful ensemble. Someone get the woman a stylist.

Playing it safe in black but totally rocking it with perfect hair, gorgeous red statement lips, sheer chiffon overlay, on trend nails and jewellery is Superman’s Supergirl, Amy Adams. She looks elegant, poised and gorgeous.

missBAFTA Film Awards 2014 - Arrivals - London

Pearly Queen Maggie Gyllenhal has managed to make herself 50 years old.  The hair would work with the right clothing but the high collar on the madly embellished jacket just does not work. Pity, as the skirt is actually really pretty and so are the sleeves. Picture this gown with a plain black satin bodice…..yeah.  That.

Chat show Queen Oprah Winfrey is rocking this Stella McCartney number. The georgette skirt is beautifully flattering, whilst the fitted lace bodice contains Oprah’s ample assets well. The satin bow completes this gown, in a colour that suits Oprah down to the ground. The jewellery and clutch are gorgeous. I would have preferred if she had done something decent with her hair, but she still outshone many women half her age and half her size.

First of all, it’s not that cold, Cruella. Second, if the dress had been in red satin, it would have worked. But it isn’t so it looks like a sack of wrinkled crap. A shame as I love the hair.

So that’s the top 5 hits and misses.  And now, onto the special awards.  Emphasis on special for some of these.

The Power couple award….movies-bafta-2014-629

Great shoes, Ange.  Might have looked better with a DRESS.  Making a statement is Hollywood’s (once) prettiest couple in his n’ hers suits. It works, I’m just not a fan….and here’s how you do it properly…

A good suit, a nice dress, happy arm in arm picture.  See, that wasn’t too hard was it?

The who the hell do you think you are? award469730613-1Let me give you a reminder, love – you are Fearne Cotton, radio DJ, sometimes presenter and nostrils massive. You are not Marilyn Monroe. Your roots need doing, your hair is awful, your dress is nasty and you are not a star. How the fudge did she get an invite and who the hell said it was okay to turn up looking like this??!

The ‘cool happenings’ at Bafta awardsarticle-2560812-1B8F071000000578-987_634x477

Emma Thompson articulately sums up my entire thoughts about Stephen Fry and his very poor, unfunny, mumbly, stuttering turn as presenter.

Tinie Tempah high 5’s the future King of England.  Risssspeck!

So, what are your thoughts? Agree, disagree? Did we miss someone who looked amazing or someone who made Lily Allen look well dressed?

We’ll be back early in March for the Oscars 🙂

Golden Globes Red Carpet Fashion

So. It has begun. Awards season is here and very soon we’ll be captivated by BAFTAS and Academy Awards fashion, but before that, there’s this little ceremony called the Golden Globes which took place at the Beverley Hilton hotel in LA last Sunday. For the main part, the stars shone, some shimmered and some skidded onto the red carpet and landed flat on their face.  Seriously, as if these people don’t have make-up artists, hairdressers and personal stylists!! I’m going to start with the misses, just because it makes me happy to laugh at people with so many resources as their disposal looking ridiculous.

Worst Dressed

#1 – Paula Patton

This dress is HIDEOUS. The unforgiving fabric that proudly shows of her rib bones is bad enough but that thing! That ’embellishment’ ?  What is that?! A towel slung over her shoulder?! A spare bit of net curtain? I’m all for big flowers and bold statements ala Carrie Bradshaw (SAtC), but nothing about this is nice.  Nothing.

#2 – Zoe Saldana

What is this dress supposed to be? I hate the arm straps/neckline, which quite frankly just looks naff. I hate the crystal embellished sheer floral panel at the front which makes the dress seem so busy and fussy and I really hate the too big shoes on her and the stupid way she’s standing in them. The bag doesn’t even match the shoes ffs! Dreadful.

#3 – Emma Thompson

Hilary Clinton called.  She wants her hair back.  The hair can only distract me for so long though.  The bacofoil dress chops Emma in half, makes her look too short, has an awful neckline, flattens her boobs and her shoes make her look like she’s standing on tip toe.  She looks uncomfortable, and looking at this get up makes me uncomfortable!

#4 – Hayden (Pantyliner) Panettiere

I hate the hair.  Jennifer Lawrence did is earlier, and better. I detest the paneling on the dress which looks a little cheaply made or is ill fitting. I don’t like the split – it either needs to be full thigh at her age or not at all.  She looks like she’s trying too hard to be a grown up sexy woman, when really she needed younger couture to achieve that, not Sharon Stone styling. Massive miss.

#5 – Julia Roberts

Is it a shirt? Is it a dress? Who knows…or cares? Lose the shirt thing and you’ve got yourself a perfectly acceptable gorgeous bandeau black dress, complete with gorgeous sparkly belt.  Keep the shirt thing and you look rubbish.  At her age and with the amount of events she’s attended, she really shouldn’t be getting it wrong, still. Oh dear.

Now for the lovely ladies who seem to own mirrors and a sense of style.

Best Dressed

#1 – Reece Witherspoon

Injecting some much needed colour (look above – black…white…black and white, yawn!), Reece looks stunning in this form fitting dress which hugs in all the right places. This colour and style look amazing on her and the gorgeous swept aside hair, natural makeup and silver accessories all look gorgeous. The dress doesn’t need embellishment; the excellent cut and fabric speak for themselves and the feature point comes in at the back – stylish, elegant and a huge hit.

#2 – Emma Watson

More colour now, and our very own Emma Watson looking lovely in red (orange??). She arrived on the red carpet wearing what seemed like a safe fashion choice; a demurely cut Dior Couture dress.  Then she turned around to reveal it was a dress and pants combo.  Very daring, but the gamble pays off and she looks amazing. Also, love the shoes!

#3 – Michelle Dockery

Another Brit, another hit. I simply adore this gown. I love the shoes, her hair and make-up, the lack of accessories (this dress speaks for itself, no need for added bling). Simply stunning.

#4 – Amy Adams

She looks oh so gorgeous in this red hot Valentino gown. Once again, colour all the way for me this season! This dress oozes elegance and glamour in an understated way. The updo, subtle jewellery and make-up give Amy a timeless beauty that compliments the gown.  Considering she’s a natural red-head, this colour works surprisingly well on her.

#5 – Sarah Paulson

I love this fairytale like gown. It’s refreshing to see someone go all out for the ‘pretty’ look, rather than A list glamour. This sweet dress makes me feel like I’m looking at an ethereal, mystical creature from Lord of the Rings rather than the red carpet! Sarah looks lovely; Lana Banana done good!

Special Mentions

Cutest Couple – Chris Hemsworth and his pregnant wife. Looking gorgeous, happy and in love.  Also, they seem quite chuffed about baby #2.

Kooky Beauty – Shouldn’t work, does.  Pretty little Pixie Zooey Deschanel – I am in love with her, still.

Best dressed Mama-to-be – Olivia Wilde, showing the others how it’s done!

Best dressed male – Leonardo DiCaprio; like a fine wine gets better with age….

Orlando Bloom – love the threads, hate the weave.  Get a haircut.

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals
Worst dressed couple. Matthew….green velour?  Really?! I kinda like the dress though…in a TOWIE way.

Well, that’s my round up of hits and misses. Black and white is bad, colour is good and less is more. Bring on the rest of the season!

Icons & idols, part 1

I was just thinking about one of my favourite ever TV shows, which starred one of my all time idols. This is someone that I admire as a person, for what they do, what they stand for, what they create  and for their general attitude in life. This person is an actress, business woman, mother, wife and style icon.

Sarah Jessica Parker

So, what’s to love about this woman and her career?

Sex and the City. This includes the tv show and both movies. I’m a huge fan; always have been, always will be and I hope the rumours about a third movie are true. Carrie Bradshaw is one of the most iconic characters in popular culture; everyone wanted to be her and everyone wanted their own name necklace to go with their very own Mr Big.  If only!

Her fabulous fragrance collection. I own three of her perfumes and they are all gorgeous, sophisticated, feminine scents but without the ridiculous designer price tag. Lovely is an absolutely classic fragrance, whereas SJP NYC is a lighter, more fun carefree perfume.  I personally love wearing both.

Her enduring relationship with Matthew Broderick – Married in 1997, they’ll celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary on May 19th. They keep their personal life quiet but are frequently pictured out and about together because they are very much together and still in love. Our Sarah certainly  isn’t fickle!
Her movie & television career – She was in some of the coolest things ever – Footloose, Hocus Pocus, LA Story, Glee, Ed Wood….and have we mentioned Sex and the City? 😉

She’s a style icon – maybe she had help from Pat Field (SaTC & The Devil wears Prada costume designer), but the fact is, SJP has taste and style enough of her own by the bucketload. She very rarely makes a bad choice – strange at times, yes but not bad.  Of course she has a team of stylists for red carpet events who help her and suggest dresses etc, but who dresses her when she’s just out in the streets of NY? That’s right…..she does 😉

sjp 2 sjp4
She’s a busy working mum, just like the rest of us – Sarah & Matthew have 3 children; James (11) and twins Marion & Tabitha (4). Juggling 3 kids, her own business and a movie career may well have inspired the movie Sarah starred in called I don’t know how she does it. I’m sure she has help – family, nannies, cleaners etc but she just gets on with the minimum amount of fuss and is never spotted with an entourage, but can instead be regularly seen out with the kids in NYC by herself or with the hubby.

So that sums up in a nutshell why I think this woman is a total legend!  Keep watching for more style icons, idols & inspirations coming soon.

The Oscars 2013 – Red Carpet Hits & Misses

This year, we were distinctly underwhelmed! It seems like there was a sea of pale, unsparkly gowns that failed to flatter and not enough colours, glitz and Hollywood glamour! In fact, this year some of the best dressed winners were the men!  So without further ado, here are the Oscars 2013 Red Carpet Hits & Misses… a couple of the usual undecided….

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

What the HECK is this cream puff non-descript gown doing on such a young, pretty talented girl? Jennifer Lawrence (winner, best actress) looks pale, washed out, and distinctly lacking sparkle.  We’re getting bored of seeing this same colour on her now.  She needs some brights in her life!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I get angry when people get on Kristin Stewart’s case all the time.  She’s actually a great actress (Panic Room), and if she looks a bit moody, she can’t help that….it’s her natural features and there’s nobody out there who smiles all the time! Plus, it takes 2 to cheat and I defy anyone to say hand on heart that they haven’t made a mistake that has hurt someone they love at some point.  I hate cheaters though….but I also hate that she got ALL of the blame.  Anyway…..not a Twilight fan, but I do think this girl gets ripped on too much.  However, in this dress….she kinda deserves it. It doesn’t fit her properly around the boobs, the colour makes her look truly undead and it just does nothing for her.  At least she’s smiling though.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Halle Berry – you are on my Shit list.  I hate this Grecian column dress, I hate that your boobs are out(ish) and I hate your hair. She always seems to think hooker wear featuring her long legs, boobs or backside will win her the day.  It doesn’t work, Catwoman.  Sorry.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Speaking of Catwoman……Oh, Anne Hathaway (winner, best supporting actress) you have let me down so badly with this dress! The colour is awful (what is it with white, Ivory, pale gowns at the moment??). This makes you look anorexic, boyish and pale as anything.  Plus it has funny almost nipple sticky out stitches around the breast area!
Loving the jewellery and hair though.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

The mutton has landed.  Nicole Kidman…usually so perfectly styled, looks like she has just stepped out of a Jackie Collins novel.  Fail.

And the Worst dressed Oscar goes to….

Helena Bonham Carter – who else?!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Mad hair – check.  Black gown – check. Thank god we can always rely on Helena to get it wrong and turn up looking like a sack of shite.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Pop! That’s what we like – some colour and Hollywood Glamour.  Reece Witherspoon absolutely nails it in this fantastic gown, with gorgeous 1950s inspired hair and sparkling jewels.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Curvy and gorgeous! Love the dress, hair, make up and the fact that Adele blows someone like Skinny Anne Hathaway clean off the red carpet!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Jessica Chastain wows again….I am even forgiving the pale colour because with her colouring, it works perfectly! The hair and lips set this dress off a treat…..Jessica is definitely one to watch in the style stakes.

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Jennifer Hudson looks just fantastic in this gorgeous blue gown. The clutch matches perfectly, the sleek hair is lovely and glam, and we love the big rock on her finger!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Sandy looks so pretty in this gorgeous gown.  Her hair looks gorgeous swept to one side, the bag compliments the outfit perfectly and the firm fitting gown shows off Sandy’s still amazing figure.  Love it!

And the best dressed Oscar award goes to…..

Jennifer Aniston!

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Is it orange? Is it red? Don’t know, don’t care! Jen provides some much needed colour, along with super cute hair and in-love-glow.  The accessories are all perfect and she shines and shimmers in this fantastic gown.  Definitely my favourite!

The Men

85th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals  Capture  cp

Joseph Gordon Levitt                 Bradley Cooper                            Chris Pine

Bebonair, stylish, gorgeous….these lovely lads were rocking the red carpet in style!

Best Dressed Couple

ben_affleck_wife_jennifer_garner_oscars_2013_red_carpet_18ilhel-18ilhh1 ben_affleck_and_jennifer_garner_at_the_2012_academy_awards_596502

Jennifer Garner & Ben Afflect – still so in love, still looking amazing together!

And finally……underwhelmed & undecided:

Is it Bridget Nielsen?  Charlize Theron?  I don’t know…..and I also know about the pointy white outfit either. Usually she looks amazing, but here she looks a little butch and unfeminine.  We love the hair, but if you are going to go that short you need to team it with something that accentuates your femininity, not this androgynous monochrome blah drabble dress.  She gets no awards from this Blog!

The Baftas – Red carpet hits and misses

It rained, there were umbrellas, Hollywood A listers shivered and looked miserable despite their sparkly gowns….but they still managed to turn up the glamour – and turn out the weird.  Here are the hits & misses from the Baftas, along with a couple of on-the-fence outfits where I just can’t decide!

Jessica Chastain – Okay, I had no idea that electric blue could look so amazingly stunning on a red-head. Teamed with drop dead diva red lips, this outfit delivers Hollywood glamour in the London rain effortlessly.

BAFTA Film Awards 2013 - Arrivals - London

Paloma Faith
– cracking voice, sod all dress sense. With the right hair and make up, this dress isn’t half bad but as usual, Paloma teams it with OTT accessories and hair, and then looks like a wide eyed lunatic just for an added extra. Sort your eyebrows out, woman.

Does the massively talented, utterly gorgeous, Bafta winning Anne Hathaway ever get it wrong?  Apprently not. She looks so chic and I am loving the bag! Also love the fact that she is smiling, despite the weather.

BAFTA Film Awards 2013 - Arrivals - London

Helen Mirren….where do we start? Pink hair?  Really?  REALLY?! And then the dress…..what a sack of shit.  She suddenly seems to have gone from style icon who was graceful and stylish (and has that body, at her age!) to the Queen of Muttonia.  What? It’s a real place.

British Academy Film Awards, Arrivals,

Emilia Fox – This gown could be on the boring side but then she rocks it with gorgeous jewellery and a fab updo.  Love it, love the make up, love the smile, love Emilia.

Emilia Fox

Helena Bonham Carter – you can always rely on Mrs Batshit Tim Burton to deliver something wacky, tasteless, crappy and unstylish.  I’m a bit disappointed with this one to be honest….the hair could have been a bit more mental (although the bow is all sorts of shite), the dress isn’t half bad and the fur is a bit crap but quite not what the fuck?!?! category. She actually looks pretty, so her make up is spot on.  Still, take a look at her accessories……mental husband with batshit hair and arm in a sling.  She was never going to be a HIT but he helps to tip her into the MISS category.  Muwahaha!

Jennifer Lawrence – she is like a breath of fresh air! Fresh faced, pretty, stylish and talented to boot.  Looking a bit miserable here but hey….it’s snowing, she’s cold – and she looks so amazing she can be forgiven.

BAFTA Film Awards 2013 - Arrivals - London

Sarah Jessica Parker – This one pains me more than you will ever know.  My own personal icon, style guru, legend and the pure talent that is SJP has let me down.  I know it’s cold but a pants suit that looks like it has fat control panels on it?! Really, Sarah?  I know you can look so much prettier and glam.  Hate it 😦

BAFTA Film Awards 2013 - Arrivals - London

Gemma Arterton – Why is this woman so effortlessly beautiful?  Why does she always look amazing? It isn’t fair.  I want to hate her but she’s just too amazing. I love the flesh coloured stripe on the dress…..she looks fantastic and her barely there make up and dress work brilliantly.

On the fence
I want to love these offerings from Natalie and Jennifer (two ladies who I usually adore!) but I just don’t.  I can’t say that they’re misses, but they aren’t hits either.  What went wrong ladies??
natalie jenniferg

And the Bafta is awarded to……
Thandie Newton – She looks phenomenal in Louis Vuitton. I love every single thing about this outfit – the hair, the make up, the accessories, the flash of toned leg, the bag, the toned slender arms, those gorgeous shoes……take a good long look, Mirren – you could have pulled this off…..almost.

The Golden Globes Red Carpet

Golden Globes….Fashion winner and losers

Money, quite clearly does not buy you fashion sense. It can buy you a stylist, but clearly the budget doesn’t stretch to a mirror so you can see what the hell they have done to you! First up are the stars with mirrors, fashion sense and taste.

Emily Blunt.  This woman is a goddess.  Always elegant, beautiful and chic at these events – no wonder she is making waves in Hollywood – she’s a top notch actress to boot.

Zooey Deschanel – the poster child for ‘kookiness’. Sod being kooky – with her dark locks and pale skin she absolutely rocks in red and on the red carpet!

Another red winner.  Jennifer Garner (who probably used to work out too much) looks like she has being working out less because she looks softer and more feminine (I think she can sometimes look muscley, mannish). Here she shines!

Lea Michele never ever gets it wrong.  Ever. Drool.

Amanda Seyfried and Anne Hathaway make us Les happy……divine!

Looks good in a tux, but have you seen those baby blues?!!!

And now…..for the failures and this year……they’re EPIC.

You can always rely on Helena to turn up looking suitably batshit.  Kind of loving the bag though.

Love Claire usually but somehow this dress chops her in half and makes her look short and stumpy. Can’t put my finger on it, I just don’t like it!

Rachel Weisz, such a gorgeous woman….in such an ugly dress.

Halle Berry in an awful dress and flaunting her legs as though she’s at a Miss World Pageant.  Massive fail.  Ewww. Put it away, have some dignity and remember….you were a shit Catwoman.

Lucy Liu, appearing this year in your Gran’s curtains.

Helen Mirren has such an amazing body at her age…..yet she drapes it in this kak?!?!

Marion Cotillard. No, no, no, no.  Just….no.
